IDLab scientists held a session on the digitalization and intellectualization of firms' activities at an international conference

As part of the XII International Scientific and Practical Conference "Schumpeter Readings," a session dedicated to the digitalization and intellectualization of firms and territories took place. The session was organized and moderated by Mariia Molodchik, Doctor of Economic Sciences, Senior Researcher at the International Laboratory of Intangible-driven Economy (IDLab), and Professor in the Department of Economics and Finance at HSE University – Perm.

The conference was held from December 12 to 14 at the Perm National Research Polytechnic University (PNRPU). Participants discussed pressing issues related to digitalization, the implementation of artificial intelligence, and technological breakthroughs in the real sector of the economy.

During the session on digitalization and intellectualization of firms and territories, research from leading scientific groups at the Perm campus of HSE University, PNRPU, and PGNIU was presented. Junior Researcher at IDLab, Evgeniya Shenkman, opened the meeting with a report analyzing scientific publications on the digital transformation of small and medium-sized enterprises over the past ten years. The research, conducted in collaboration with luliia Naidenova, Evgeniya Shakina, and Victor Krakovich, was prepared with support from the Russian Science Foundation grant No. 23-78-10149.

IDLab Research Assistant Alexey Smirnov presented work focused on identifying signs of emotional burnout among esports athletes using artificial intelligence methods. An analysis of social media messages established a connection between their tone and the athletes' stress levels.

Mariia Molodchik delivered a presentation on the impact of small business entrepreneurial orientation on the level of digitalization within firms. The study, conducted in collaboration with Anna Daviy and Carlos Hardon (Russian Science Foundation grant No. 23-78-10149), demonstrated that innovativeness, proactivity, risk-taking, and autonomy contribute to the adoption of new technologies and enhance the operational flexibility of enterprises.

The session also addressed issues related to the application of artificial intelligence in regional development and startups. Sergey Isaev from PGNIU discussed the challenges of implementing AI in the context of security and personnel training, while colleagues from PNRPU, Olga Andreeva and Maria Kudina, presented statistics on technological startups reflecting global trends in neural network development. Daria Belonogova concluded the discussion with a report on transitioning to domestic software for business analytics, emphasizing its strategic importance for the economy.

The conference demonstrated a high level of interest from the scientific community regarding digitalization and AI issues. Participants noted the significance of collaboration among science, business, and government for sustainable economic growth and technological development in Russia.

The "Schumpeter Readings" has a long and successful history as a scientific platform. I am very glad that this year I was invited to organize a session on the processes of digitalization of firms and territories. I believe we were able to productively discuss contemporary problems and trends in the field of digitalization and address the relevance of applying AI. I would like to highlight that among the speakers were representatives from three universities in Perm, and researchers from St. Petersburg and Vigo (Spain) were co-authors of some studies. Personally, I found it particularly interesting that our regional competition "Big Exploration" has grown to a federal level over the past few years and is now an active platform for startup acceleration. A huge thank you to all participants, and I look forward to seeing you at the XIII "Schumpeter Readings"!
