IDLab staff took part in the scientific conference "Fall into ML 2023"

Irina Polyakova, Egor Ivanov and Alexey Smirnov attended the presentations and plenary discussions at the "Fall into ML 2023" conference held in Moscow on 26 - 28 October 2023.

The conference was hosted by the International Laboratory of Stochastic Algorithms and Multivariate Logical Inference. The event was held in Moscow at the Cultural Centre of the National Research University "Higher School of Economics".

Leading researchers from academia and business presented papers on comprehensive topics on artificial intelligence: 3D modeling, theoretical machine learning, computer vision, NLP and many other aspects.

Conference participants shared their impressions of the event:

Impressions from "Fall into ML 2023" are strictly positive!
HSE welcomes all HSE students, and no matter whether you are a Permian or a Muscovite, you feel at home within the walls of HSE in any city.
The conference allowed me to find out what is going on "at the cutting edge" of computer science. It seems to me that the current hot topics are optimization of existing models and algorithms, as well as some kind of theoretical justification and proof of why something works well (many things in deep learning are derived from experimentation rather than rigorous mathematical proofs).
For example, I remember the report on topological analysis of models-transformers, where it turned out that the text written by a human has topological dimensionality on average 1-2 larger than that created by a neural network. Isn't it an invariant for determining the generated text?
We also enjoyed the plenary discussions, where experts from academia and industry discussed ethics and legal regulation of deep learning technologies, problems in modern scientific laboratories and global research goals. It was a special guilty pleasure to watch intelligent adults arguing for an hour just about "what is intelligence". :)
I would like to note that people freely made contact, talked about their work. It turned out that during coffee breaks I learnt as much interesting things as at the reports themselves.
Thank you to the organizers for a wonderful conference and to IDLab for organizing this trip. I would like to believe that this is not my last visit to Fall into ML.

Machine learning conferences are always a pleasure. Not all information about breakthrough technologies in the field of artificial intelligence reaches the general public through the media, so it is at such conferences that one can truly marvel at the current state of progress. Especially since there were many speakers from leading AI research centres in Russia. Personally, I was struck by how close neural networks are getting to the quality of the task of generating 3D models - a very expensive resource in a wide range of industries. Also memorable were the panel discussions on the future of artificial intelligence from a practical and ethical point of view. In general, it was interesting and useful, it would be great to have the opportunity to visit Fall into ML in future years.
