HSE – Perm hosted a seminar "Sport Analytics: Exploring Economic and Managerial Insights" as part of the iCare International Conference
HSE - Perm hosted the X International Conference on Applied Research in Economics (iCare). Within the framework of this conference, a Workshop was held: Sport Analytics: Exploring Economic and Managerial Insights, which brought together many researchers and practitioners interested in the application of data analysis in sports.
Workshop: Sport Analytics: Exploring Economic and Managerial Insights, which took place on May 23, 2023, brought together many researchers from the field of sports analytics. This event allowed employees of the scientific field, as well as practitioners, to present their work results, discuss options for improving research, find solutions to problems or answers to controversial questions and be inspired for further work.
All the presented research within the Workshop was carried out using data from sports and esports events, but the results of the research can be extended to other areas of life.
The program of the last event was quite intense. The conference presented works on the topics of discrimination in sports, the impact of competition on performance, the chocking effect, the performance of athletes under international sanctions, there were also reports on women's football, income and profit in sports and other equally interesting topics. More information about the conference can be found on the event's website.
Participants and listeners of the iCare conference shared their impressions of the event.
Dmitry Dagaev: «The sports analytics workshop, which was held as part of the iCare conference, brought together the best Russian sports researchers and prominent international scientists. The level of the reports was quite consistent with the level of international conferences that we were used to in the pre-covid time. The thematic diversity of the reports was very wide: it turned out to discuss works related to the rating and prediction of match results, discrimination of athletes by name and curling strategies. I am grateful to my colleagues from International Laboratory of Intangible-driven Economy and the Perm campus of the Higher School of Economics, who organized this event. I hope that it will become a good tradition, and we will be able to gather on the campus site every year».
Inna Zaitseva: «I really liked the event that our colleagues organized. The set of topics was very wide: professional and amateur sports were presented; both women's and men's; sports from chess to curling; theoretical and empirical work at different stages. I especially remember the work presented by Cornel Nesseler on discrimination arising from extreme events, such a lot of work was done to develop the design of the experiment and its implementation! I also received valuable feedback and support from colleagues. I am very glad that I was able to attend this event in person, it greatly contributes to networking and the development of connections that can be relied on in the future. I express my gratitude to the organizers of the event and its participants! ».
Thadeu Gasparetto: «Attending the Workshop: Sport Analytics: Exploring Economic and Managerial Insights was great! I had the chance to present a draft of an ongoing research project and get valuable feedback from participants. It was also enjoyable reconnecting with friends and listening to the presentations by other colleagues during the event».
Maria Molodchik: «The workshop "Sport Analytics: Exploring Economic and Managerial Insights" brought together representatives of eight universities from six countries, which allowed for a comprehensive and very active discussion of the economics of sports. Both leading researchers and research trainees presented their reports. Sports topics are interesting as a laboratory where you can study in detail the behavior of economic agents in a highly competitive environment. The research works were devoted to both economic and mathematical modeling and empirical testing of behavioral aspects of economic agents' decisions».
Daria Tabashnikova: «At the workshop, I remember most of all two reports "Choking Under Pressure in Tournament Settings: A Theoretical Analysis for Optimal Prize Structure", made by Irina Polyakova, and the report "How Extreme Situations Change Attitudes: An Analysis of Discrimination towards Foreigners in Poland" by Cornel Nesseler. The topic of the first report is closely related to what I do, so I was interested to find out what my colleagues did in the study. And the second report surprised with its unusual research method, the authors sent letters to coaches and looked at how the probability of receiving a response depends on the surname and first name (nationality) of the sender. In general, the workshop was organized at a high level, so it was nice to listen to all the reports and to present a paper».
Gleb Vasiliev: "The last workshop "Sport Analytics: Exploring Economic and Managerial Insights" was very productive and eventful. I enjoyed my participation very much and am grateful to IDLab for the opportunity to present the results of his work to a strong international audience, receive valuable comments, discuss the progress of colleagues on current projects and outline areas for future collaboration. This is my first visit to Perm, I was impressed by both the atmosphere of the event and the beauty of the city, and therefore I will look forward to the next occasion to return. Many thanks to the organizers for holding a wonderful event and creating an environment for the exchange of ideas!".
