Series of workshops as part of the student seminar "Cooking up your first research"

At the end of December, researchers from the International Laboratory for the Economics of Intangible Assets held a series of workshops on academic writing “What-you-need-to know to write a Research Paper” for students, graduate students, research assistant and just everyone. Master classes were organized as part of the student seminar "Cooking up your first research".

On December 9, 2022, as part of the master class “What-you-need-to know about data and results section in the article”, Petr Parshakov (Deputy Head of IDLab) gave recommendations on how to present the empirical results. In particular, before writing an article, Peter advises everyone to read the book Rhetoric of Economics by Deidra McCloskey, in which everyone can find useful information for themselves. And then Dennis Coates (IDLab, University of Maryland) commented on what he thinks is important as an editor of an academic journal. The listeners of the master class considered it up-to-date and very, very, very useful.

“I learned 2 very important advice from the master class. The first is Peter's advice to analyze not only and not so much the statistical significance of the results obtained, but also the economic significance. The second, Dennis' advice, is to analyze not only and not so much the average effect, but the entire confidence interval of the calculated effect. These tips seem obvious, but in my experience, once you start writing, it can be easy to forget them.”

On December 13, 2022 Elena Shakina (head of IDLab) as part of the master class “What-you-need-to know about introduction” talked about the basic elements of every good introduction, as well as the best practices for writing these basic elements. Angel Barajas (IDLab Research Supervisor, University of Vigo) supplemented Elena's presentation with his advice for young researchers. The listeners of the master class found it beautiful, informative, complementary and full of insights.

“For me, as a phd student, the past series of master classes was very useful, because the information that the lecturers presented was extremely practical: take it and write! What I tried to do: take and use the presented information to write articles on the topic of my dissertation. I hope that soon we will see the applied result of the past master classes in my articles!”
