IDLab researchers participated in the International Conference on Econometrics and Business Analytics iCEBA-2024
The IV International Conference on Econometrics and Business Analytics iCEBA-2024 brought together participants from different countries, including Germany, Norway, Italy, Australia, France, Great Britain and Kazakhstan. The International Laboratory of Intangible-driven Economy of the National Research University Higher School of Economics - Perm was represented at the conference by Laboratory Head Petr Parshakov, Professor, Senior Researcher Mariia Molodchik and Research Assistant Egor Ivanov.
The conference became an important platform for sharing ideas and research results, as well as discussing new approaches to data modeling, business process optimization, and decision-making under uncertainty. During the breakout sessions, scientists and analysts shared knowledge on how new technologies and analytical tools can help companies better adapt to rapidly changing market conditions and improve their performance. The discussions emphasized the development of joint strategies to combine research and practical solutions to solve complex economic challenges.
IDLab International Laboratory was represented at the conference by three participants with reports. Research Assistant Egor Ivanov presented the results of the study “Exploring the US Professional Leagues Priorities: Profit or Victory?” conducted jointly with Peter Parshakov and Dennis Coates. The researchers found out that US professional sports leagues do not seek to implement a strategy of profit maximization (as it is believed), but focus on the strategy of winning in competition. At the same time, some sports teams use both strategies, balancing the number of wins and profitability.
Mariia Molodchik presented a report “Evaluating the Impact of Governmental Support for Small and Medium Enterprises through Synthetic Control Group Analysis”. This is the results of the research within the framework of the Russian Science Foundation grant №23-78-10149 “Factors of SME resource intensification in conditions of external uncertainty”, devoted to the analysis of the effect of the program “Priority Investment Project” of the Agency for the Development of Small and Medium Enterprises of Perm region. The co-authors of the study are Anna Bykova, Head of the SME Agency, Egor Ivanov, and Darya Markanova, a student of the Master's program “Financial Strategies and Analytics”.
Petr Parshakov presented the results of the paper “Blockbuster breakthroughs radical innovations from indie-developers”, written jointly with Iuliia Naidenova and Elena Shakina. The study analyzed how innovations in IT are related to their demand. The authors found that the effect differs depending on who developed the innovative products. On average, the effect was negative, but for the most demanded products it was positive.
The presentations at the conference became a source of new ideas that will help researchers to define further directions of work in the field of econometrics and business analytics.
Egor Ivanov, Research Assistant at the International Laboratory of Intangible-driven Economy
This was my first overseas conference, and the comments of researchers from other countries, based on their unique experience of being in a different culture, were a valuable addition for us. This is important in socio-economic research where the answer to the question at hand depends on cultural and historical context. I presented a paper “Exploring the US Professional Leagues Priorities: Profit or Victory?” on a joint paper with Peter Parshakov and Dennis Coates, which is still in progress. It was quite easy for me to speak in English in front of an unfamiliar audience. I think that the experience of participating in internal seminars of the laboratory had an impact.
