Presentation at the webinar of Kochubey Center as part of the OnLab project
IDLab experts made a presentation "INFODEMIA COVID-19: shocks of financial markets" according to the results of a scientific study
Experts of the International Laboratory of Intangible-driven Economy, Elena Shakina and Petr Parshakov, presented the results of recent study of the stock markets of 22 countries. This study estimate the potential impact and extent of the spread of the infodemia accompanying the outbreak of COVID-19.
The study examined in detail both idiosyncratic and systematic shocks of market systems. For example, even with the background of general pessimistic forecasts, insignificant positive news related to an increase in the number of people recovered led to a significant improvement of stock market indices.
The analysis is based on the brute-force search method: identifying important events that affect investors' mood, even when initially assessed as insignificant. Traditional event study methodology is modified to take into account a high frequency of negative news.
