ID Lab ONLINE Research Workshop
Cornel Nesseler from Norwegian University of Science and Technology (Trondheim) presented the research "Mapping barriers to social integration in Europe with a field experiment".
Social integration, as the extent to which members of a group interact with each other, is a desirable outcome in well-functioning diverse societies. This paper measures the barriers to access social participation in 22 countries (21 EU members and Russia). We created email accounts with typical names for the majority and the three largest minority groups in each country and used these accounts to ask amateur football clubs for the opportunity to participate in a training session. The difference in the response rates for the majority compared to the respective minorities is a valid measure to identify barriers for integration in each country. This allows us to present a comparison of social integration between and within countries.
