Online Seminar "Cooking Up Your 1st Research" Held at the International Laboratory of Intangible Assets with Professor Dennis Coates
On February 21, 2025, the International Laboratory of Intangible Assets hosted an online seminar titled "Cooking Up Your 1st Research," dedicated to the fundamentals of academic research and publishing. The event featured Professor Dennis Coates from the University of Maryland, Baltimore, who shared valuable insights and practical advice for young researchers.
The seminar attracted over 30 participants from Perm, Moscow, and St. Petersburg. Among the attendees were not only early-career researchers but also experienced scholars who found the discussion engaging and relevant.
During the session, Professor Coates covered key aspects of the research process, including how to develop a strong research question, collect and analyze data, and interpret findings. He emphasized the importance of critical thinking, distinguishing correlation from causation, and ensuring that research findings are not only statistically valid but also meaningful in a real-world context.
A significant part of the discussion focused on the academic publishing process—from structuring a paper to selecting the right journal. Professor Coates stressed that authors must clearly articulate their study’s contribution and adhere to journal guidelines. The participants also explored the role of artificial intelligence in research. While AI can be a useful tool for gathering information, Professor Coates cautioned against relying on it for writing academic papers, as it can lead to inaccuracies and unreliable content.
The seminar was highly interactive, with participants actively engaging in discussions and posing thought-provoking questions. The "Cooking Up Your 1st Research" series continues, offering young scholars the opportunity to enhance their research skills and navigate the complexities of academic publishing.
