Abstract:
This paper presents a systematic review and meta-analysis of the relationship between violent video game play and aggression. Synthesizing peer-reviewed empirical studies published since 2010, we examined both experimental and non-experimental designs to evaluate whether exposure to violent video games is associated with aggressive outcomes. Effect sizes were harmonized to a common metric and analyzed using random-effects models. Overall, we find a small but significant positive association between violent video game play and aggression. The strength of this relationship varies systematically with methodological characteristics: studies with pre-registration, larger sample sizes, and randomized experimental designs tend to report smaller effects than non-pre-registered or small-sample studies.
