Abstract:
This study investigates dual incentive dynamics—specifically spillover and shadow effects, alongside monetary incentives—in multi-stage competitive environments using data from professional esports tournaments in Counter-Strike: Global Offensive (CS:GO). Utilizing detailed data from 444 tournaments and 610 teams between 2015 and 2022, this research demonstrates significant negative spillover effects, wherein cumulative fatigue from prior matches adversely impacts subsequent performance. Shadow effects, characterized by strategic adjustments in anticipation of future opponents, also significantly influence team efforts, indicating increased motivation when weaker opponents are expected in upcoming rounds. Furthermore, monetary incentives, represented by the prize spread between potential winnings and losses, exhibit a negative quadratic effect on team performance, with maximum adverse impact observed when the prize differential constitutes approximately 58% of the total prize pool. Notably, age-based differences emerge regarding sensitivity to monetary rewards: younger teams demonstrate heightened responsiveness to financial incentives, whereas more experienced teams prioritize intrinsic motivators. These findings extend traditional sports economics concepts to esports, highlighting critical strategic implications for tournament organizers, teams, and performance management more broadly.
