On April 3, HSE-Perm researchers participated online in the international scientific and practical conference «Independent Neutral Turkmenistan – the Birthplace of International Sports Cooperation and Health». The event, held at the Turkmen State Institute of Physical Education and Sports, gathered participants from more than 12 countries.
The conference focused on key issues in the development of mass and professional sports, the implementation of digital and innovative technologies, and the strengthening of international scientific collaboration in physical culture and health.
Researchers from the HSE Perm Center for Cognitive Neuroscience presented papers at the plenary session — a distinguished opportunity, as the program featured research from China, Turkey, the United States, the United Kingdom, and the CIS.
Sofia Kulikova, Head of the Center for Cognitive Neuroscience, presented a paper titled «Using Digital Platforms as an Analytics and Management Tool in Mass Sports». This study was conducted in collaboration with the Autonomous Educational Institution of Higher Professional Education «Modern Educational Technologies and Innovative Systems».
Junior research fellow Anna Radygina and research intern Valeria Belash presented a joint report, «Comparative Analysis of Posture Assessment Models Using an Angular Approach for Monitoring Exercise Technique».
Anna Radygina, Junior Researcher at the Center for Cognitive Neuroscience
We began collaborating with Turkmenistan last fall. We were able to travel there and meet the university's rector and leading specialists in person. We aimed to establish a long-term partnership.
This spring, we were invited to participate in a plenary session at a major conference. We selected topics that would be most interesting in this format: the development of AI, specifically computer vision for assessing the performance of sports exercises, and the development of digital platforms for mass sports analytics. In addition to scientists from Russia, the conference included representatives from universities in Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan, Tajikistan, Azerbaijan, Armenia, Georgia, China, Turkey, the UK, and the US.
The topic presented at the conference grew out of a project in which Valeria Belash and I were working on recognizing the movements of child figure skaters. However, in this case, we focused on monitoring the performance of more standard exercises – squats and push-ups.
Evgeniya Shenkman, Junior Research Fellow at the International Laboratory for Intangible-Driven Economy, presented a paper in the «Artificial Intelligence and Innovative Technologies in Sports» section.
Her paper, «Monetary Incentives in eSports Tournaments: The Impact of Prize Distribution on Team Performance», is based on an analysis of real-world data from major eSports tournaments. The study found that:
The larger the gap between the top prize places, the higher the performance of the participants.
However, this effect primarily manifests itself among already strong teams.
Less successful teams respond poorly to prize increases, requiring additional non-monetary or intermediate incentives.
Based on these findings, Evgeniya offered recommendations for organizers: increasing the top prize tier to maintain competition among the leaders while simultaneously creating incentive mechanisms for all participants.
This paper was completed as part of the project «Studying the Role of Intellectual Resources in the Internationalization of Companies from Developing Countries under Exogenous Shocks», implemented as part of the HSE International Academic Cooperation project.
We congratulate the HSE Perm staff on their successful performance at the international venue! This confirms the high level of scientific expertise of the Perm campus and its readiness to be part of the global educational and research community.
