HSE IDLab and IUST Held the Second Seminar in an Educational Series for Early‑Career Researchers
On 16 March 2026, the second seminar in an educational series for early‑career researchers, organized by the International Laboratory of Intangible-driven Economy (IDLab) at the National Research University Higher School of Economics (HSE) in collaboration with the Iran University of Science and Technology (IUST), was held. The event was conducted within HSE’s "International Academic Cooperation" project and attracted more than 40 participants. The speaker was Dennis C. Coates, Professor of Economics at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC) and Editor‑in‑Chief of the Journal of Sports Economics.
The seminar focused on the presentation of empirical results in economics papers aimed at international journals. During his lecture, Professor Coates examined in detail the aspects that editors pay attention to at the early stages of manuscript evaluation and outlined the reporting and interpretative practices that make empirical research clearer and more persuasive to readers.
A separate segment of the seminar addressed the structure of empirical studies and the presentation of results. The discussion covered the role of descriptive statistics, the interpretation of models (in particular, logit and probit models), and the distinction between coefficients and marginal effects. Examples were provided to demonstrate how the chosen format for reporting results affects their reception.
Practical aspects of econometric analysis were also considered, including the use of variable log‑transformations, approaches to clustering standard errors, and the interpretation of models with interaction terms. These topics were illustrated by typical situations researchers encounter when preparing manuscripts in the social and economic sciences.
A substantial portion of the event was devoted to a question‑and‑answer session, during which participants discussed specific research cases and received tailored recommendations on preparing and presenting their work.
The seminar was part of HSE’s "International Academic Cooperation" project. Events of this kind play an important role in fostering academic collaboration and in establishing sustainable research links between IDLab at HSE and the Iran University of Science and Technology (IUST). An additional seminar in the series is planned for the current calendar year, its topic will be announced in due course.
